Exceptional Dental Care for Senior Patients
At Nordhus Dentistry, we offer a comprehensive range of cosmetic, restorative, and general dentistry services to patients of all ages. In order to offer dentistry of only the highest quality, we are responsive to the special needs of patients in different age groups, including our much treasured senior patients. Of course, we understand that each individual senior patient has his or her unique needs and goals, and we provide personalized treatment according to those needs and goals. However, we also understand that senior patients are likely to have different needs and oral health issues in general than, say, our teenaged patients or our patients in their mid-twenties. Dr. Byron J. Nordhus has the training, sensitivity, and skills to address these needs and issues, providing exceptional dental care for seniors at our Wichita, KS practice.
If you have an elderly loved one who requires dental care, or if you are a senior looking for an outstanding dentist, we invite you to schedule a consultation with Dr. Nordhus today. We would welcome the opportunity to show you why Nordhus Dentistry is the right place to serve the dental needs of your entire family.
How Does Dr. Nordhus and His Team Serve the Special Needs of Senior Dental Patients?
Like any other patient, senior patients want to be treated with respect and professionalism. They don’t want to be spoken down to or feel as though they are being lectured. While many seniors have physical and other impairments that may limit their ability to care for their oral health, they do not want to be reprimanded for the condition of their teeth and gums. For us to do so would be counterproductive to what we hope to achieve. We want our senior patients to feel comfortable in our office and to trust our team. In the cases of some seniors, visits to our practice may represent the best chances they have of thoroughly cleaning their teeth and gums, so we want them to enjoy the experience of coming into our office as much as possible.
Of course, we treat all of our patients with courtesy and dignity, but we strive to use a particularly gentle touch in dealing with our senior patients.
What Oral Health Issues Are Most Common Among Senior Patients?
As we age, our bodies become more vulnerable to a variety of health problems, and our mouths are no exception. Senior patients are generally more susceptible to such oral health problems as:
- Gum disease
- Dry mouth, which can in turn increase the risk of gum disease
- Oral cancer
- Tooth discoloration, particularly intrinsic discoloration
- Enamel erosion and tooth decay
- Tooth loss
- Gum recession
- Root canal infections
Routine cleanings and oral exams can help senior patients prevent some of these issues from occurring, while our restorative dentistry services can help to return form and function to the mouth when damage does occur.
